Elmyna Bouchard
Born in Jonquière, Québec, Elmyna Bouchard has lived and worked in Montréal since 1991. In 2003 she was the recipient of the Monique and Robert Parizeau Foundation Prize given by the National Museum of Fine Arts of Québec.
In her engravings, the detachment and deconstruction of symbols allows only recognizable traits to be perceived. From her characteristically spontaneous universe and the frankness of her etchings comes a playful and troubling poetry. For her series Carnets de motifs, Bouchard questions the graphic systems of writing, musical transcriptions and their relationship to the brush stroke of an artist. Her metaphorical works compare gestures and the organization of these representational systems with the creativity of the drawing. Her project initiates and opens up these graphic themes. For her, the work is the same as a student of music who begins his education by learning do re mi fa so la ti do.
