At first glance, Lévesques' paintings can seem absurd. They are sprinkled of icons and symbols, spots and lines, to form floating and exploded compositions. As graffiti accumulations, those signs share a tensed existence in the compositions, without caring about the contiguous elements of their environment. They are individualistic icons. Their anarchic coexistence is almost exempt of communication, as the urban citizens who are crossing each other without a look.
Taking shape with a clashing blend of styles and languages, his pictures are painted with a wide range of materials. Intertwining randomness and forwardness, the worthy oil and the trivial sticker are applied with the same sake on the surface. Then, the range of signage Lévesque is producing is scattered upside down in the pictural space. Thus, he creates shambles, chaos and divagations which emanate puzzling, and often cacophonous atmospheres.
However, no matter the density of Lévesque compositions, his intention is to give form to the elusive character of thought; thus insisting on the distractions produced by the interferences between ideas : the memory of a fade away dream, the confusion when facing an idea held on the tip of one’s tongue, the lack of concentration caused by stress, the psychedelic hallucination, the hysteric delirium of the fool, Alice’s fall into Wonderland : here are the many fugitive states of mind the artist tends to represent – and paradoxically to define.
